Draft classes?

Just wondering exactly how the incoming draft classes get determined? I assumed it was based on debut year in the major leagues, but there are guys already in the League (e.g., Tinker, Joss) who didn't reach the bigs until 1902 . . .

In fact, MANY of the players drafted in the 1901 Draft didn't actually debut in the major leagues until 1902 . . . but there are a handful that did break in during 1901 (D.Jones, Yerkes). Weird, can someone explain this to me?

OK, after further poking around it looks as if this might be because the BAA Draft is in May, so that the 1901 Draft includes all players whose ML debut was between May 1901 and May 1902. There do appear to be a couple of exceptions to this (Lundgren, debuted 19 June 1902) but this does fit almost everyone. Isn't this a year earlier than we'd like guys to appear in the BAA?

Don't think so, I schedule the draft in March BTW. It's determined by the database who I assume determine draft classes by the debut of the player.

The schedule on the Rules page says May 1st for the Draft.

Well, then, there's some sort of problem. There is a long list of guys who were in the 1901 Draft who didn't debut until 1902 (according to baseball-reference.com), including at least nine first-rounders.

Which database are you using? Lahman? Arod/Garlon? Gambo?
